چکیده

To investigate secular changes in CO and CH4, we examined monthly means of tropospheric measurements made from samples collected at 19 ®xed sites in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL) global cooperative ̄ask sampling network. The CH4 data are available for the period 1984±1995. A somewhat shorter time series is available for CO (1989±1995). The data were analyzed to extract a consistent pattern of change in time and in latitude. The most important preliminary ®nding is that the patterns of CO and CH4 change appear to resemble that of biomass burning. That is, there is maximum change during local spring in both northern and southern hemispheres. If we attribute a signi®cant part of the change in CH4 trend (3±6 ppb/yr) to biomass burning, the corresponding change in CO is approximately 2±5 ppb/yr. This would explain the bulk of the observed change in CO (4±7 ppb/yr). Ó 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Indoor particulate concentration during biomass burning in central India

Indoor air particulate (PM) exposure is several folds more dangerous than  outdoor air  owing to burning of different materials. Burning biomass emits toxic fumes that are found to be associated with  numerous health problems  such as respiratory diseases, etc. In our study area,  approximately 80% of the population of Chhattisgarh state, central India use biomass  such as wood, and cow dung as...

Oxygenated compounds in aged biomass burning plumes over the Eastern Mediterranean: evidence for strong secondary production of methanol and acetone

Airborne measurements of acetone, methanol, PAN, acetonitrile (by Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry), and CO (by Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy) have been performed during the Mediterranean Intensive Oxidants Study (MINOS August 2001). We have identified ten biomass burning plumes from strongly elevated acetonitrile mixing ratios. The characteristic biomass burning signatu...

Pollution events observed during CARIBIC flights in the upper troposphere between South China and the Philippines

A strong pollution episode in the upper troposphere between South China and the Philippines was observed during CARIBIC flights in April 2007. Five pollution events were observed, where enhancements in aerosol and trace gas concentrations including CO, CO2, CH4, nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and halocarbons were observed along the flight tracks during four sequential flights. The importance o...

A global three-dimensional model analysis of the atmospheric budgets of HCN and CH3CN: Constraints from aircraft and ground measurements

[1] We construct global atmospheric budgets of HCN and CH3CN through a threedimensional (3-D) model simulation of the HCN-CH3CN-CO system constrained and evaluated with aircraft observations from the Transport and Chemical Evolution Over the Pacific (TRACE-P) mission over the NW Pacific in February–April 2001. Observed background vertical gradients of HCN and CH3CN imply a dominant ocean sink f...

Impacts of 2006 Indonesian fires and dynamics on tropical upper tropospheric carbon monoxide and ozone

We investigate the relative impacts of biomass burning emissions and dynamics on tropical upper tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) over western and central Indonesia during the August–November 2006 fires in equatorial Asia by using a global three-dimensional model of tropospheric chemistry (GEOS-Chem) and by comparing model results with Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations of...
